Zairil Khir Johari is a Malaysian politician and is currently the Assistant National Publicity Secretary of the Democratic Action Party.

Zairil joined DAP in 2010 and was appointed Political Secretary to DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng in February 2011. At the DAP National Congress in December 2012, Zairil was elected into the Central Executive Committee and appointed as the Assistant National Publicity Secretary. He is also the youngest member of the current CEC.


Zairil is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Penang Institute, the think tank of the Penang state government, a post he has held since March 2012. Under his leadership, the Penang Institute convened numerous international conferences and lectures featuring world-renowned speakers such as Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Professor Tariq Ramadan, former Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and former Indonesian President BJ Habibie.

Zairil is also a columnist for The Malaysian Insider.


Zairil is a graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, where he received his MA in International Studies and Diplomacy. He also has a degree in International Systems Engineering from Multimedia University.
