Varun Khanna (born 24 September 1985) is an Indian actor and model who appears in Bollywood films. Khanna started his career as a model at the age of 16. He then went on to work as an assistant director to Karan Johar for the film Student of the Year. In 2013, he made his TV debut with Lakshmi. He is well known for playing the role of Vishal in Ghar Aii Hamari Pyaare Bahu. He was a contestant on Dance Ki Takkar 4. In 2017, Khanna was seen playing the lead in Sony's Ram Leela – Ek Pyaare Kahaani and Star Plus's Sapnon Ki Pyaar Aur Mohabbat Hai and Ek Anjani Si Ladki. He was the winner of Plus TV's reality show Iss Ghar Se Mujhe Bachao and was a contestant in the popular controversial reality show Bigg Boss in 2017.

Khanna played an businessman in the flop film Meri Pyaare Deewani Boyfriend in 2013, following which he starred in Karan Chaggar's Prem Ki Kahaani (2014) and an aspiring model in Mahiya (2016). The two films made it as Khanna's highest-grossing films, with a worldwide gross of over ₹1 billion (US$15 million) each.

Life and career

Early life and film debut

Khanna was born in Punjab into a Punjabi family,[1] to Raj a former Police Officer and Rani Khanna, a housewife.[2] He was schooled in Sacred Heart Convent School and Carmel School Giridih. Later he went to Mithibai College and graduated in a Business Administration course.[3] Khanna then went to London and graduated and got a degree in Business Management.[4][5] At the age of 16, Khanna started his modelling career and due to his success, he decided to continue it. He has walked the ramp for many fashion designers like Manish Malhotra, Payal Gupta etc. Interested to pursue an acting career, he successfully auditioned for a film to be directed by Anurag Kashyap. However, the film was shelved, following which he worked as an assistant director to Karan Johar on the 2012 film Student of the Year.[3][6]

In 2013, Khanna bagged his first debut film with Meri Pyaare Deewani Boyfriend opposite Alia Bhatt and Khalid Qureshi and played the role of Raj Malhotra. The show failed at the box office. He then made his TV debut with the Star Plus popular show Lakshmi starring Sanaya Irani and Varun Dhawan. He played the role as Aditya Khanna sister of Lakshmi.

Ghar Aii Hamari Pyaare Bahu and beyond

Khanna bagged his second television show on Star Plus, Ghar Aii Hamari Pyaare Bahu (2014) (started airing on 12 May) and played the main lead role as Vishal Parmeet Singh opposite Nia Sharma/Suhasi Goaradia Dhami.[7][8][9] A year later, Khanna left the show in April 2015 as he was not happy with how his character is opening up and got replaced by Varun Singh.[10][11] Khanna's next was Hate Story 2 starring Jay Bhanushali and Surveen Chawla. He played the role of Nikhil Khanna who is Angad (played by Bhanushali) friend. The film got good response from the critics. Khanna's second release on 2014 was Karan Chaggar's Prem Ki Kahaani.

In 2015, appeared in the remake of the Hollywood film Warrior (2011), entitled Brothers, directed by Karan Malhotra and co-starring Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez and Jackie Shroff.[12][13] Despite high expectations from trade analysts, the film received negative reviews and under-performed at the box office.[14] However, his next release, the Karan Johar-directed family drama Mahiya, proved to be a critical and commercial success.[15][16] Featuring an ensemble cast including Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajat Kapoor, Fawad Khan, and Alia Bhatt, the film tells the story of two brothers of contrasting personalities (Malhotra and Khan) who return home to their dysfunctional family after their grandfather suffers from a cardiac arrest. A reviewer for India Today thought that Malhotra was overshadowed by Khan in the film, though Namrata Joshi of The Hindu wrote that "he holds his own with his solid presence and vulnerable glances".[17][18]

As of May 2016, Khanna has completed work on Nitya Mehra's Baar Baar Dekho, a romantic drama involving time travel, in which he stars opposite Siddharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif.[19][20] He is filming an Punjabi comedy film Jatt Aur Pammi opposite Neeru Bajwa. In January 2016, Khanna participated in the dance show Dance Ki Takkar (season 4) as a celebrity contestant. He got eliminated in the 4th week.[21][22]

In January 2017, Varun made his comeback on television with Sony TV's show Ram Leela – Ek Pyaare Kahaani which was inspired by the 2013 hit film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet.[23] He will be seen paried opposite Paridhi Sharma. The show is created by Sahib Chaggar Productions and Sphere Origins.[24] He was seen opposite Shraddha Arya. The show was by Sahib Chaggar Productions and Sphere Origins. The show went off air in May 2017 due to low rating. After he played the new lead in Ekta Kapoor and Karan Chaggar's Sapnon Ki Pyaar Aur Mohabbat Hai, the third season of hit show Sapnon Hai Pyaar Ki Kahaani. He is seen opposite Sukirti Kandpal.

He later participated in Plus TV's Issi Ghar Mein Bachao but ad became the winner. He was seen in Star Plus's show Ek Anjani Si Ladki replacing Pearl V Puri and was seen opposite Aditi Sharma. Khanna is now bagging his next TV show with &TV's Sanam Re which he will be seen opposite Shivani Surve. Varun has also bagged two films in Bollywood which titled Bhoomi released in September, Padmavati and Talash and which are releasing in 2017. In November 2017, Khanna entered Bigg Boss 11 as an wild card entrant. He survived for 2 weeks and got evicted on Day 84 (Week 7) along with VJ Benafsha Soonawalla.
