SMS addiction or textaholism is the extreme and/or pathological preocupation with habitual texting. A textaholic is commonly considered to be "someone Who Is Addicted To Texting And IMing".[1] SMS addicts do not always suffer negative consequences from their addiction. Some individuals can indulge in extreme textaholism with no apparent destructive consequences,[2] and can even drop the habit quite easily if and when another preocupation comes along to take its place. Other textaholics, however, have suffered significantly for their habit.[3]

Overt signs of SMS addiction

There are several characteristic behaviors associated with textaholism, including the following:

  • texting with someone who is in one's physical presence.
  • strong unwillingness to cut back in spite of negative consequences of excessive texting.
  • simultaneously texting while engaged in other routine activities, such as dining, driving, working, or attending school.
  • false positives: some textaholics will sometimes mistakenly think they heard or felt a message come in.
  • sending significantly more than 80 messages (the average amount[4]) per day. There are a number of known cases of individuals who've sent well over 30,000 texts in a one month period[5][6][7].
