Shatarupa Chatterjee, born in Guwahati the northeastern part of India, is an Indian classical dance performer. Shatarupa is the senior disciple of a well-known Odissi and Sattriya dance exponent of India and Guru, Mrs. (Srimati) Gorima Hazarika. She is gifted with an expressive face, versatility that registers the subtle nuances of abhinaya with effortless grace and has drawn critical acclaim from all art connoisseur.[1]

Early life

She started learning Odissi from the age of six and have completed over twenty years of extensive and specialized training under the able guidance of her guru. As a part of her wider exposure she has attended several workshops organized by the doyen of Odissi dance, recipient of Padmavibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra and from Guru Muralidhar Majhi another learned Guru of Odissi dance.[citation needed]

Sattriya dance (Classical dance style of Assam): Being inspired by the devotional dance form of Sattriya, Shatarupa simulteneously has dedicated herself to learn the intricacies of this dance form. She has also had the privilege to be trained under Guru Ghanakanta Barbayan of Kamalabari Sattra. Further to imbibe the traditional intricacies of the Sattriya Dance as prevalent in the Sattras of Assam, she has also obtained special skills and received extensive training from Naren Chandra Barua of Uttar Kamalabari Sattra.[citation needed]


She has with utmost devotion and sincerity towards Indian Classical Arts led to imbibe the spirit of both Odissi dance (classical dance style of Orissa) and Sattriya dance (classical dance style of Assam) and has succeeded in learning its various intricacies. Her repertoire consists of compositions, choreographic creation and traditional pieces.[citation needed]

She has over ten years of experience of imparting training to students at different levels. She has choreographed different dance items based on the indigenous folk culture of Assam and also on poems and songs by legendary poets and artists of Assam.[citation needed]


Shatarupa has been awarded the Visharad Degree in Odissi from Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalay Mandal, Mumbai. She is also a trained choreographer as she completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Choreography under the renowned Guru Dr Maya Rao, from Natya Institute of Kathak & Choreography, Bangalore. She has the credit of producing both Sanskrit and Contemporary theme based dance dramas, which were well received by the audiences.[citation needed]

Shatarupa is an ‘A’ grade artiste for Doordarshan and has given a number of solo performances. She has performed in various places in north eastern region and other parts of India as well.[citation needed]

With her masters in History from Gauhati University, she is currently associated with the training and research of the various classical traditions of India.[citation needed]
