The Return To History Tour is the eighteenth major tour by progressive metal band Queensryche, and twelth headlining (Though with support dates) supporting their self-titled thirteenth album.

Background

This was the first tour with new vocalist Todd LaTorre, who replaced Geoff Tate after 31 years. It was very extensive, 12 legs of 150+ shows over more than 2 years, but it was also much looser than prior tours, with many legs featuring scattered dates with fewer solid stints. Before the tour began in earnest, the band played several scattered gigs, including performances at the Halfway Jam (July 28, 2012) Rock The Bay (October 12, 2012), South Texas Rock Fest (October 13, 2012) and several other scattered gigs through January 2013. The tour began in March of 2013 with a North American leg, which included performances at the Monsters of Rock Cruise on March 17 and 18. In April they performed at the Belgian Power Prog Metal Fest on April 14, and after more scattered gigs (Including a performance at Germany's Rock Hard Festival on May 18, and at Ohio Bike Week on May 31) played a second US leg in June-July, including a performance at Rock USA on July 18. After more scattered concerts in August including a performance at the Sturgis Bike Rally on August 2 and a performance at Rock Jam on August 24, the band went on a Europe leg in October through November, including performances at Rock The Boat (November 2) and Nordfest (November 9).

2014 featured several US legs, but they were more scattered and not consistent. They were from March-April (Including the Cruise To The Edge boat festival on April 8 and 11 and M3 Rock Festival on April 26) May-June (Including a brief trip to Sweden for the Sweden Rock Festival on June 4, plus Rock The Falls on June 21) July-August (Including the Sturgis Bike Rally on August 2, Rockin' The Rivers on August 8, and Rockin' The Farm on August 31) and October-November, with a few scattered one-offs at the end of the year, including a trip to the UK for Hard Rock Hell. Also, notably this year for the first time in many they played big arenas and ampitheaters as headliners.

Finally, in 2015 they performed another US leg, from March-June (Including at Welcome To Rockville on April 25, M3 Rock Festival on May 2, Carolina Rebellion on May 3, Rocklahoma on May 24), before going off to Europe in July-August (Preceded by a performance at Rock USA on July 15, and featuring performances at Bang Your Head on July 17, Pistoia Blues Festival on July 19, Metaldays on July 20, Z7 Open Air on July 26, Rock Classics on July 28, Wacken Open Air on July 31, Skogrosjet on August 1, and Alcatraz Metal Festival on August 8) and finally back to the US from August-October, supporting Scorpions on their Return To Forever Tour (With a few headlining dates) allowing them to play big arenas again. The tour closed on October 10.

Post-tour the band played a number of scattered, one-off gigs through the end of the year. The tour was well-recieved, with Todd's vocal range, comparable Geoff Tate's in the 1980s, allowing them to pull of successful renditions of older material, and he was considered a worthy replacement.

Setlist

Taking advantage of Todd's high range, comparable to Tate's in his prime, the band played a wide variety of older material at Todd's debut at the Halfway Jam, entirely from the EP through Empire, neglecting all the albums afterwards. This was due to Todd's lack of familiarity with the material in that time. The concert included the first performance of "Queen of The Reich" since 2006, and "En Force" since 2005, but more notably revived songs that hadn't been performed in decades, featuring the first performance of "Child Of Fire" since 1985, "Warning" since 1987, and "Prophecy" since 1989. The set consisted of:

  1. "Queen Of The Reich"
  2. "Speak"
  3. "Neue Regel"
  4. "Walk In The Shadows"
  5. "En Force"
  6. "I Don't Believe In Love"
  7. "Child Of Fire"
  8. "The Whisper"
  9. "Warning"
  10. "Spreading The Disease"
  11. "The Needle Lies"
  12. "Prophecy"
  13. "Take Hold Of The Flame"
  14. "My Empty Room"
  15. "Eyes Of A Stranger"
  16. "Empire"
  17. "Wrathchild" (Originally by Iron Maiden)
  18. "Jet City Woman"
  19. "Roads To Madness"

The one-off shows over the next few months featured the same set, except "Wrathchild", "Neue Regel", and "Spreading The Disease" were dropped and "Silent Lucidity" was put in, also the songs were in different order.

The tour itself lived up to the name, with the setlist entirely drawn from the EP through Empire. The first leg in March 2013 featured the same setlist as the one-offs, consisting of:

  1. "Queen Of The Reich"
  2. "Speak"
  3. "Walk In The Shadows"
  4. "The Whisper"
  5. "En Force"
  6. "Child Of Fire"
  7. "Warning"
  8. "The Needle Lies"
  9. "Prophecy"
  10. "Roads To Madness"
  11. "I Don't Believe In Love"
  12. "My Empty Room"
  13. "Eyes Of A Stranger"
  14. "Take Hold Of The Flame"
  15. "Silent Lucidity"
  16. "Jet City Woman"
  17. "Empire"

At Power Prog Metal Fest the set was abridged, dropping "I Don't Believe In Love", "Roads To Madness", "Silent Lucidity", and "Jet City Woman". At Rock Hard they played that set as well but added two songs from the new album, "Redemption" and "Fallout". On the second US leg in June-July, as well as the European leg, they played a set similar to this, but gradually added more new material, consisting of:

  1. "Queen Of The Reich"
  2. "Speak"
  3. "Walk In The Shadows"
  4. "Redemption" (Dropped on European leg)
  5. "The Whisper"
  6. "En Force"
  7. "Child Of Fire"
  8. "Warning"
  9. "X2" (Added on July 13, 2013)
  10. "Where Dreams Go To Die" (Added on July 13, 2013)
  11. "Midnight Lullaby" (Added on European leg)
  12. "A World Without" (Added on European leg)
  13. Guitar Solo (Added on European leg)
  14. "The Needle Lies"
  15. "Prophecy" (Replaced by "NM 156" on October 27, 2013)
  16. "Roads To Madness" (Dropped after June 22, 2013)
  17. "My Empty Room"
  18. "Eyes Of A Stranger"
  19. "Fallout"
  20. "Take Hold Of The Flame" (Moved to end on European leg)
  21. "Jet City Woman"
  22. "Silent Lucidity" (Added on European leg)
  23. "Empire" (Moved after "Eyes Of A Stranger" on European leg)

"Suite Sister Mary" was played once as well, and abridged sets were played during festival shows.

On the 2014 leg of the tour, they changed up the show, including adding "Nightrider" which hadn't been played since 2005. The typical setlist for the 2014 legs of the tour consisted of:

  1. "Nightrider"
  2. "Breaking The Silence"
  3. "Walk In The Shadows"
  4. "The Whisper"
  5. "En Force"
  6. "Warning"
  7. "I Will Remember" (Replaced by "Silent Lucidity" on April 25)
  8. "Vindication" (Only on first night, was replaced after by "Spore" afterwards. "Spore" dropped after July 26)
  9. "X2" (Added on April 17)
  10. "Where Dreams Go To Die" (Added on April 17)
  11. "Midnight Lullaby" (Dropped after October 11)
  12. "A World Without" (Dropped after October 11)
  13. Guitar Solo
  14. "The Needle Lies"
  15. "NM 156"
  16. "The Lady Wore Black"
  17. "My Empty Room"
  18. "Eyes Of A Stranger"
  19. "Empire"
  20. "Queen Of The Reich"
  21. "Jet City Woman"
  22. "Take Hold Of The Flame"

"Another Rainy Night (Without You)" was played once.

The Cruise To The Edge shows featured a set the same as the 2013 shows, except shorter, dropping "Child Of Fire", "NM 156", and "Silent Lucidity". An abridged set was played at M3 Rock Festival, as well as at Rockin' The Rivers, consisting of:

  1. "Nightrider"
  2. "Breaking The Silence"
  3. "Walk In The Shadows"
  4. "Warning"
  5. "X2"
  6. "Where Dreams Go To Die"
  7. "Eyes Of A Stranger"
  8. "Empire"
  9. "Queen Of The Reich"
  10. "Jet City Woman"
  11. "Take Hold Of The Flame"

At Sweden Rock Festival "X2" and "Midnight Lullaby" were not played.

While the 2013 and 2014 shows were somewhat static, a lot of variation happened on the 2015 shows. The original set on the first US legs was the same as in 2014, but "Midnight Lullaby" and "A World Without" were dropped, leaving only 2 new songs and the rest all from the early albums. The band also started playing alternating setlists, rotating "Breaking The Silence" and "Speak" as well as "The Whisper" and "I Don't Believe In Love". On the European leg they started a full on rotating set, including "Arrow Of Time" from the to-be-released Condition Human, consisting of:

  1. "Anarchy-X"
  2. "Nightrider"
  3. "Breaking The Silence" or "Speak"
  4. "I Don't Believe in Love" (Only on Setlist A)
  5. "Walk In The Shadows"
  6. "The Whisper" (Added on August 4)
  7. "En Force"
  8. "Warning"
  9. "Silent Lucidity"
  10. "X2"
  11. "Where Dreams Go To Die"
  12. "The Needle Lies" (Only on Setlist B)
  13. "Arrow Of Time"
  14. "NM 156"
  15. "The Lady Wore Black"
  16. "My Empty Room"
  17. "Eyes Of A Stranger"
  18. "Empire"
  19. "Queen Of The Reich"
  20. "Jet City Woman"
  21. "Take Hold Of The Flame"

Finally, the final US leg featured a mix of supporting and headlining shows. The supporting set consisted of:

  1. "Anarchy-X"
  2. "The Needle Lies"
  3. "Walk In The Shadows"
  4. "Jet City Woman"
  5. "Silent Lucidity"
  6. "Arrow Of Time"
  7. "Eyes Of A Stranger"
  8. "Empire"
  9. "Queen Of The Reich"

"The Whisper" was also occasionally rotated in. Headlining shows had the same set as Europe's, but "The Needle Lies" was the second song. The post-tour one-offs had that set as well.

As for festival shows: At Cruise To The Edge, as well as M3 Rock Festival they played a set of:

  1. "Nightrider"
  2. "Breaking The Silence"
  3. "Walk In The Shadows"
  4. "En Force"
  5. "Another Rainy Night (Without You)"
  6. "Silent Lucidity"
  7. "NM 156"
  8. "Eyes Of A Stranger"
  9. "Empire"
  10. "Queen Of The Reich"
  11. "Jet City Woman"
  12. "Take Hold Of The Flame"

Welcome To Rockville, Carolina Rebellion, and Wacken Open Air featured that set, but even shorter, dropping "NM 156", and "Another Rainy Night (Without You)". Most of the other shows featured that setlist but with other songs played, such as "The Needle Lies" or "Arrow Of Time".
