Nuno Pontes and five other inmates escaped in daylight from the maximum-security Western Penitentiary in Pittsburgh. The escape is described in The Pittsburgh Six episode of the Breakout (2010 TV series). The narrative in the episode is conducted in first person following the written description of the events provided by Nuno Pontes. It is stated that after Nuno Pontes was captured he spent the following 12 years in solitary confinement.
