Mercury is the working title of an upcoming film starring Sacha Baron Cohen as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.[1] The screenplay for Mercury was written by Peter Morgan; the film is being produced by Graham King and directed by Stephen Frears.

The film will chronicle the band in the years leading up to their 1985 performance at Live Aid. The final years leading to Mercury's AIDS-related death in 1991 will not be portrayed.

Plot

The film will chronicle the band's formation in 1971 and the years leading up to their performance at Live Aid in 1985.[2][3][4][5] The final years leading to Mercury's AIDS-related death in 1991 will not be portrayed in the film.[6]

Cast

Katy Perry is being considered to portray Mary Austin, Mercury's girlfriend during the 1970s then friend until his death in 1991.[7]

Development

The screenplay for Mercury was written by Peter Morgan; the film is being produced by Graham King and directed by Stephen Frears.[7] King confirmed that Mercury is the working title of the film.[8]

In 2007, Cohen's publicist denied rumors that he would be portraying Mercury on screen.[9]

Cohen has worked with Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Meddows Taylor to perfect his impersonation of Mercury.[7] May confirmed Cohen's involvement in the project as early as 2010.[8]

Music

May and Taylor will oversee music featured in the film, which will include some of Queen's biggest hits such as "Bohemian Rhapsody", "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions".[8] Songs from Mercury's solo career will also be included.[10] Details have not been confirmed whether Cohen will replicate Mercury's vocals or if original tracks will be used (Cohen had previously sang in Tim Burton's 2007 film Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street).[6][11]
