Lyle Peterson aka Tubalcain is
Lyle, also known by his Internet alias Tubalcain, is a retired machine shop instructor who lives in central Illinios. He has provided innumerable videos about metalworking. The contents of his videos cover a wide range of metal working disciplines. These include lathe operations, milling machines and operations, tools and instruction on their proper use as well as topics on operating a forge (in his backyard) and how to create proper castings using home-made flasks. He is also known as Mr. Pete.
His alias comes from a biblical reference to Genesis chapter 4 verse 22. The Bible mentions Tubalcain as a metal worker who was a ?forger of all instruments of iron and bronze.? Consistent with his namesake, Lyle presses on to teach others about his passion for metal working.
During his career he has taught Machine Shop and Industrial Arts for over 40 years. In addition to his teaching career he has worked in private machine shops as well as commercial corporations like Caterpillar. In his spare time he enjoys making model Stirling and steam engines.
The videos cover in-depth discussion of subjects like taps and dies, what they are, how they are used and some tips about improving your use of them. Identifying bolt types and their use. Micrometers and their use and even a quiz. On the lathe, how to turn, face and support your work as well as tips to effectively machine longer pieces with support. Using a bandsaw as well as a tour through his shop as he identifies many tools, what they are for and how to use them. There are even a series of them on steam engines which he enjoys making and sharing his skills.
Lyle also uses a dry sense of humor to make the topic lively and break up monotony which could very well be dry material. This is reflected in the stories he tells about kids he?s had in classes he has taught.
Lyle has promoted machining and machine tooling to preserve it for the next generation.
