Justin Bieber Justin Bieber NRJ Music Awards 2012 @justinbieber Justin Bieber on Twitter align="center"|2009 2As of April 2012, Justin Bieber's Twitter has the second most popular Twitter account, behind Lady Gaga.[1] In April 2012 the account had over 20 million followers.[2][3] Bieber was frequently a trending topic on Twitter upon the feature's initial launch,[4] and was named the top trending star on Twitter in 2010.[5] In March 2012, Bieber fans launched an unsuccessful attempt to unseat Lady Gaga as the most popular celebrity on Twitter.[6]

Bieber's tweets about the 2011 Egyptian revolution (at a time when he had roughly 8 million followers) generated in 32,000 responses each, which made Bieber's Twitter account one of the single largest nodes for discussion about the uprising.[7][8]

Rihanna Rihanna, LOUD Tour, Belfast cropped 2@rihanna Rihanna on Twitter align="center"|???? 4At the beginning of March 2011, Rihanna asked fans to help her select her next single, following the release of "S&M" (2011) from her fifth album Loud (2010). Via Twitter, she asked fans to choose from "Cheers (Drink to That)", "Man Down", "California King Bed" or "Fading". The most popular choice would have its video filmed at the end of March 2011.[9] Fans selected "California King Bed" as the next single to be released from the album in the United States;[10] while internationally, it served as the fourth single, as it was announced.[11][12] In the United States, however, "Man Down" was sent for radio adds before "California King Bed".[13]

In late December 2011, Rihanna again used Twitter to ask her fans which song from her sixth album Talk That Talk should be released as the third single.[14] On January 10, 2012, Rihanna announced that "Talk That Talk" will be the next single from the album while tweeting, "#TALKthatTALK love u guys! Been missin u,".[15] Along with the message, she also debuted the single's cover. The black and white image features Rihanna crouching against a wall and wearing punk clothes.[15][16]

Barack Obama Official portrait of Barack Obama @BarackObama Barack Obama on Twitter align="center"|2007 7 As of 28 May 2012 (2012 -05-28) Barack Obama's account ranked 7th in terms of followers,[17] having peaked in May 2010 at fourth.[18] Obama was described the first President to respond to questions on Twitter.[19][20] Obama has at various times held public forums in which he fielded questions posted on Twitter such as the Townhall @ the White House in 2011.[21][22]

Following the 2008 United States presidential election, the Democratic National Committee was believed to have taken over the account and in a speech in November 2009, Obama stated "I have never used Twitter", despite having over 2.6 million followers.[23][24] The account is "run by #Obama2012 campaign staff. Tweets from the President are signed -bo."[25]

Ashton Kutcher Ashton Kutcher by David Shankbone @apluskAshton Kutcher on Twitter align="center"|2008 18Ashton Kutcher's Twitter account became the first to have with 1 million followers in April 2009,[26] and spent over 13 months as the world's most followed twitter account. As of 27 May 2012 (2012 -05-27), Kutcher ranked 18th.[27] In 2009 Kutcher and Demi Moore were referred to as Twitter's first celebrity couple, with 7,800 and 5,600 followers respectively.[28] They were a measuring stick by which Twitter was determined to have gone mainstream in early 2009.[29]

In 2011 Kutcher turned over his Twitter account to a production company after erroneously tweeting in protest of the firing of Joe Paterno, assuming it was age-related (while it was actually related to the Penn State sex abuse scandal). [30][31][32][33]
