The FreePBX Distro is an open source Unified Communications Server software that includes a GUI (graphical user interface) that controls and manages Asterisk (PBX). The FreePBX Distro includes packages that offer VoIP, PBX, Fax, voice-mail and email functions. FreePBX is licensed under GPL.[1]

The FreePBX Distro Linux Distribution is based on CentOS, which has binary compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.


The Official FreePBX Distro can be installed by downloading an ISO that includes the system CentOS, Asterisk, FreePBX GUI and assorted dependencies.

Support for Telephony Hardware

The FreePBX Distro has built in support with multiple vendor cards including Digium, OpenVox, Alto, Rhino Equipment, Xorcom and Sangoma. [2][3]

The FreePBX Distro is maintained by Schmooze Com Inc. FreePBX made its debut in 2004 as the AMP project (Asterisk Management Portal), the FreePBX Distro was released in 2011 as an all in one solution for building a PBX using Asterisk, CentOS and FreePBX. [6]

The FreePBX Distro provides update scripts for every major release track.

The FreePBX Distro Version Numbering System tells you at a glance what the core pieces of the track are.In the example the “Autovon” Release 2.210.62-1

  • 2.210.62-1 - The first 2 is the Major Track Number
  • 2.210.62.-1 - This is the FreePBX GUI version 2.10
  • 2.210.62.-1 - This is the Centos version 6.2
  • 2.210.62-1 -The final -1 is just the minor release revision in this main version
