The First Battle of Vincennes occured between Governor Henry Hamilton and Leonard Helm. Earlier that Year George Rogers Clark, an American general captured 3 major British outposts controlling the Illinois County, without firing a shot. When Hamilton found out about this he gathered a force of more than 200 soldiers and 300 indians. When Clark captured Vincennes earlier that year, he left Helm in control with about 20 militia to control the local population. When Hamilton arrived in Vincennes, Helm refused to surrender the fort and the First Battle of Vincennes began. Hamilton then found out that Clark's army was stationed in Kaskaskia, so his plan was to recapture Vincennes then move to recapture his other outposts that were under American control, in the Spring. The first shots rang out that day and Hamilton's men easily captured Helm and 8 others. When Clark learned that his small force in Vincennes was defeated, he decided to leave in January and suprise attack Hamilton in the middle of winter. When Hamilton retook Vincennes most of his army went back to Detriot, leaving him with only 90 soldiers and 200 indians. Clark sent out with about 80 soldiers and his plan was to retake Vincennes in late February.

Battle

Hamilton was expecting Clark and his entire army to be there, so he brung a much larger force to recapture Vincennes. When Helm's forces knew that they were being attacked, the entire French militia deserted Helm leaving him with only 20 men to defend the fort. Hamilton's army surrounded the fort, trapping Helm and his small force. Helm's plan was to hold up Hamilton and his army until reinforcements from Kentucky would arrive. In less than an hour of fighting, Hamilton's army besieged the fort killing 13 of Helm's men in the process. Helm and 8 others were spared and taken as prisoners.
