"El Pussycat Ska" is a British reggae and ska band formed by tenor saxophonist Drew Stansall in 2001, combining elements of early rock and roll, reggae and swing music. The old school Jamaican Jazz group based in Leicester, United Kingdom and boasts a seven-piece ensemble that plays a mixture of authentic ska jazz, reggae, soul and blue beat music in the early Jamaican dance hall style. The band is influenced by early Jamaican music legends Rico Rodriguez, Alton Ellis, Laurel Aitken and Derrick Morgan, as well as Owen Gray, The Specials, Prince Buster, Simarip and Freetown.
El pussycat ska formed in 2001 in the United Kingdom by Drew Stansall and has backed pioneering Jamaican legends Laurel Aitken, Alton Ellis and Rico Rodriguez. Individual band members have also been involved with authentic ska music for many years, actively playing with influential bands such as the reformed Specials, Prince Buster, Simarip and Owen Gray. The Pussycats have played thousands of shows in the U.K., Europe and the U.S. In 2005, El pussycat toured Sloviena, Serbia and Croatia. The band played two shows in New York in 2008, including the King Django version city ska night.
El Pussycat has a distinct, sophisticated reggae sound that resembles a "swing" version of Jamaican Jazz that combines the 1930's influence of artists such as King Curtis, Cab Calloway and Dizzie Gillespie, with those of early Jamaican musicians of the 60s, including Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, Laurel Aitken and Jackie Mittoo among others. What these early jazz and reggae artists shared was energetic music that was popular for dancing and used to spread entertainment and goodwill around the world.
