Drashti Dhami (born 10 January 1985)[1] is an Indian actress who works in the Hindi television industry and is a model and dancer. Dhami establishing herself as one of the most popular actresses in the industry. Dhami is recognized for her roles in the shows Dill Mill Gayye, Geet - Hui Sabse Parayi, Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani[2] and Pardes Mein Hai Mera Dil[3]. Dhami is included several times in "50 Sexiest Asian Women" list by Eastern Eye. Dhami is also the winner of dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 6 in 2013 and later was a finalist in Dance Ki Takkar Season 6 in 2017. In 2017, she played lead role in Parvati Ki Pyaari Kahaani. She is currently playing the Lead Role of Nandini in Colors TV Show Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka opposite Shakti Arora and Abhinav Shukla.[4]

Early life

Dhami was born on 10 January 1985 to a Gujarati family in Mumbai where she also studied. She attended Mary Immaculate Girl's High School and also went to Mumbai's Mithibai College from where she has a degree in Sociology.[5] Before entering into modelling, Dhami was a dance instructor. She did it for six months for pocket money.[6] Dhami belongs to a conservative family. According to her interview in itimes, she said:

When I got [the] offer to dance in a music video ... I had to seek permission from ten different family members including my closest relatives. It was my cousin who supported me, convinced everyone and still stands by me whenever I have to take a decision on my career front. So it's not been so easy for me but my family's support is always with me."[7]


Start of her career & debut show (2007-11)

Dhami began her career in modeling with print and television advertisements before debuting in the entertainment industry with her appearance in the music video for "Saiyyan Dil Mein Aana Re" followed by "Humko Aaj Kal Hai", "Teri Meri Nazar Ki Dori" and a Punjabi music video "Nachle Soniyo Tu" and done advertisements like Colgate with Saif Ali Khan, Lion Honey, Pulimoottil Silks, Vasan Eye care, RKS Grand (Shopping Mall), Amul, VIP Bags, Chevrolet, Reliance mobile and jewellery.[8]

Dhami got her first role was in the Star One show Dill Mill Gayye, where she portrayed Dr. Muskaan. She then appeared as the female lead on the STAR One show Geet - Hui Sabse Parayi.[9][5] Dhami got recognition with her portrayal of the character Geet in Geet - Hui Sabse Parayi.[10][11]

Madhubala & breakthrough role (2012-present)

Dhami also made a brief appearance through her dance performance for the show Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha. She then played the lead role in the Colors TV serial Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon opposite to Vivian Dsena from 2012-2014.[12][13][14] She is also the winner of the sixth season of Indian dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa alongside choreographer Salman Yusuff Khan.[15] In June 2014, Dhami for a short duration hosted the seventh season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. She has been roped in as the face of MATRIX India's hair colour brand - SoColor as the brand ambassador of that product.[16][5] In 2015, Dhami played the roles of Rani Gayatri and Savitri in a show Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani on Zee TV.[17][18] She left the show in May 2016.[19] During playing the role of Gayatri, Dhami said:

“I do feel a little under pressure since ‘Madhubala’ was such a success. But I am also looking forward to seeing my fans’ reaction to my new show. Even my family and friends are very excited,” “It found it difficult to speak in the dialect which people spoke at that time. That was challenging. Other than that, I did not have any issues with the role.”[20]

In 2016, she was also part of a web series called I Don't Watch TV along with many TV celebrities.[21] She also did a small cameo role in the popular Life OK finite series Ek Sindoor Ki Vishwaas playing the role of a Naagin in August 2016.

In November 2016, Dhami began playing Naina Batra, the lead in the Star Plus series and Ekta Kapoor's Pardes Mein Hai Mera Dil which aired on Star Plus. She was seen paried opposite Arjun Bijlani.[22][23] The show went off air in June 2017.[24] In the same year, Dhami done the short film called The Change.[25] During an interview, Dhami said that she will not going to do kissing and bold scenes on screen, when asked the reason she told that this is her personal choice as she is not comfortable with it.[26][6]

She also made a Bollywood debut with Karan Johar's Luv Ishq and Karan Chaggar's Ishq Da Kamla. Dhami participated in Dance Ki Takkar 6 in May 2017.[27] She got eliminated on 25 June but made a comeback as wild card.[28] In August 2017, Dhami played the role of Parvati in Sony's Parvati Ki Pyaari Kahaani opposite Varun Dahiya.[29] In November 2017, she took a temporary exit from the show but made her re entry in January 2018.[30] In February 2018, she quit the show but now recently she made a comeback. In April, Dhami left the show again getting replaced by Shefali Sharma. As of June 2018 she is playing the role of Nandini in the show Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka on Colors where she also played a victim of domestic violence.[31]

Other appearances

Dhami made an appearance on Imagine TV's reality show Big Money: Chota Parda Bada Game in 2010.[32] She later in the same year was a part of another reality show, Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan.[33] In 2011, Dhami (along with her Geet co-actor, Gurmeet Choudhary) made a guest dance performance on Rubina Dilaik & Avinash Sachdev's Chhoti Bahu - Sawar Ke Rang Rachi for a special Holi episode. Later in July 2011, she made an dance performance on Sajan Re Jhoot Mat Bolo and later in December 2011, Dhami then made a apearance on Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani and danced along with Nishant Singh on the last episode which aired Abhay & Pia's wedding. In July 2012, Dhami made a guest appearance on Colors TV's Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha to promote her show Madhubala.

In March 2013, she made an guest appearance on Nach Baliye 5 to support her brother Jaisheel Dhami & her sister in law Suhasi Dhami who were contestants on the show.[34] In June 2014, Dhami was seen in Colors TV's Mission Sapne and later made another appearance in Comedy Nights with Kapil. In September 2015, Dhami was seen as a guest contestant on the eighth season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa to support Sanaya Irani.

Other work

Dhami was also the Brand Ambassador for Canvironment Week 2011 and 2013 to support the cause of 'Save Our Planet'.[5] In 2016, Dhami was part of the Swachh Survekshan 2017 Initiative. An initiative for an environmentally cleaner India (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan).[35] Dhami has appeared on various magazine covers over the years.[citation needed]

Dhami was also the captain for Team 'D' Celebrity Championship 2016, where 6 teams comprising 78 television personalities competed to help kids in need of education and food. Dhami won Celebrity Championship 2016 and received an Award from 'I HELP A KID.COM' Celebrity Championship.[36] In 2017, Dhami became the brand ambassador of Bajaj Brahmi Amla Ayurvedic Hair oil.[37]

In March 2018, Dhami had featured in an music video produced and directed by Karan Chaggar.[38] It had featured other popular celebs like Sanaya Irani, Divyanka Tripathi, Hina Khan, Pooja Gaur, Krystle D'Souza.

Personal life

On 21 February 2015, Dhami married businessman Neeraj Khemka.[39][40] Suhasi Dhami who is also an actress is married to her elder brother 'Jaisheel Dhami'.[41][42] Dhami said that her in-laws are very supportive when it comes to her work.[43] Dhami maintains a Twitter [44] and a Instagram [45] account. Dhami loves traveling a lot.[46]

She is good friends with Sanaya Irani, Mohit Sehgal, Additi Gupta.

In the media

The media praises her acting skills by giving the title of 'Queen of Expression'.[47] Bombay Times called her 'Numero Uno' actress on television.[7] Dhami is also known for her style and fashion sense.[48][49] Dhami is among the highest earning television actress in India.[50][51] In 2011, Dhami was voted the most desirable woman on television in polls conducted by[52]

Dhami was included in second place on "Television's Top 10 Actresses" list by Rediff.[53] Dhami also included in the top nine list of Indian television most stylish on-screen actress by Rediff.[54] The UK-based newspaper Eastern Eye placed her in their "50 Sexiest Asian Women" list. In 2012,[55] Eastern Eye placed her at twelfth position. Thereafter she remained in the top three spots for three consecutive years, listed at the third spot in 2013,[56] the second spot in 2014,[57] the third spot in 2015,[58] the fourth spot in 2016,[59] and sixth spot in 2017.[60] Dhami included in list of FHM India 100 Sexiest women of 2014 at 10th place.[61] In 2016, Dhami was nominated in "Sexiest Woman" list by FHM India.[62]

Dhami was listed eight among the "35 Hottest Actresses In Indian Television" by, an Indian lifestyle website for men.[63] She was ranked in 38th position in The Times of India's 2014 list of "50 Most Desirable Women".[64] In 2017, In 2015, Dhami was voted the most prominent and hottest actress in polls by[65][66] According to the survey in India in 2017, Dhami was voted as desirable woman opposite to Hrithik Roshan in the list.[67]

Dhami received an offer to participate in Bigg Boss but she rejected it.[68] During her dance performance in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6, film maker Karan Johar compared Dhami to film actress Zeenat Aman.[69] Film maker Karan Johar complimented Dhami by saying that she is better than Kareena Kapoor when she performed on 'Halkat Jawani' song from the film Heroine in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6.[70] It was rumored that Dhami received an offer for Singham Returns but the director refuted the rumors.[71][72]
