Some Traditions that the cheer team does every year is after every practice they get in a huddle and stick their right arm in and the coach, Paula Cunningham, always say "say it with your heart know you've got to work for it" and the girls respond saying "states". Competitive Season

During competitive season the cheer teams in the same District compete in dual meets within their conference to obtain confidence and practice before competing in more difficult competitions with other teams. Dual meets give the Cheer teams a hierarchy of where they stand. The KLAA (Kensington Lakes Activities Association) comes together every year to compete against each other to determine who moves further to Regionals. Usually the first place winner and second place winner of the KLAA from every conference goes to Regionals to determine who then goes to the state competition at the DeltaPlex Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Each team needs three different rounds to be a qualified to compete in competitions. Round one is specifically for jumps, which must include three different types of jumps such as toe touch, bike, hurkie. Round two is precision and gymnastics depending on the level of talent of the cheer team round two usually includes splits, back walk over, back hand spring, and standing back tuck. Every team has the same ten count precision drill to follow and they are scored on how well it is preformed. Round three is the stunting round. In round three the cheerleaders do a variety of stunts to obtain the highest amount of points. the more difficult the stunt or skill is the more points earned. However if a stunt falls the cheer team gets a penalty or deduction of points depending how bad the fall was.[2]

Football Season

The Hartland Varsity cheer teams[3] job during football season is to make sure the football team is pumped and ready for the game and to keep the crowd excited during the football game. They do this by performing chants and cheers. They have a combination of stunts and routine to keep the crowd interested. Along with stunts, chants and cheers they do a combination of tumbling passes to show their talent. Football season for the Hartland Varsity cheer team is an opportunity to show school spirit, and to build coherence for competitive season, and practice for becoming better.
