Dong Phuong Oriental Bakery is a renowned Vietnamese cuisine bakery in New Orleans, Louisiana. The nearby Vietnamese church and bakery are fixtures of the Vietnamese community in New Orleans and survived the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Dong Phuong was opened in 1981 by Vietnamese immigrants to the United States, De and Huong Tran. Huong learned to bake pastries in her father’s bakery in Vietnam and De joined in the effort to recreate his favorite childhood foods. Dong Phuong means East.[1]

The bakery's banh mi sandwiches are often referred to as Vietnamese po-boys.[2] Guidebook author Sara Roahen refers to the bakery as the Vietnamese Leidenheimer's, because Dong Phuong supplies bread for the area's banh mi makers.[3]

Dong Phuong offers a variety of baked goods, including a large assortment of bánh, at its retail bakery. The business also includes a restaurant next door, caters, and ships wholesale in the U.S. Near the Mary Queen of Vietnam Church, it is located at 14207 Chef Menteur Highway.[4]

The restaurant is a favorite of writer Poppy Z. Brite [5], and it is mentioned in her novel "Lost Souls".
