The history of teaching astronomy in Belgrade dates back to 1880, when astronomy and metheorology were introduced in the curriculum of the Belgrade's Grande École (Velika Škola), today's University of Belgrade. Since then, internationally recognized Serbian professors, such as Milan Nedeljković, Đorđe Stanojević, Milutin Milanković and Vojislav Mišković were teaching astronomy within the department.
Currently, Dejan Urošević is the Head of the Department and there is ten faculty members. The Department of Astronomy offers BSc, MSc and PhD degrees. Recently it joined Astromundus consortium.
