Department of Computer Science and Technology established in 1982, is the 2nd youngest of the ten Engineering departments in the one and half century old Bengal Engineering College (DU). The CST department, since its inception, has maintained a steady growth in every sphere of its activities and played an important role in bringing a vibrant and forward looking academic environment within the University. It is a premier institution offering high quality undergraduate and postgraduate engineering courses as well as providing an excellent infrastructure and facilities for advanced research and consultancy.
The importance of introducing a separate discipline on Computer Science and Technology was felt back in mid 70s. To serve the growing need of manpower with specialisation in Computer Design and Applications a proposal to start the new discipline was submitted to MHRD and the approval was obtained in 1981. The new department started functioning from within the Electrical Engineering department and admitted the first batch of Bachelor of Engineering (BE) students in July 1982 and a separate CST department came into existence in August 1984. In January 1988 Master of Computer Application (MCA) course was introduced; the first in Eastern region. The full time Master of Engineering (ME) course in Computer Science and Technology started from July 1992.
This department has been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) as 'A' grade department for 5 years (1999-2004). The department has also acquired ISO 9000 certification in 1999-2000. Our department is presently DST-FIST sponsored one from 2004-2005.
At present the Department is offering the following courses:
* B.E. Degree Course in Computer Science & Technology * M.E. Degree Course * Ph.D. program in Computer Science & Technology
Utilizing the State and Central Government grants the following laboratories has been established in the Department:
* Artificial Intelligence Laboratory * Computer Graphics Laboratory * Digital Logic & Computer Hardware Laboratory * Micro Computer Laboratory * P.C. Laboratory * Process Automation Laboratory
Under the world Bank Project IMPACT, a new Computer laboratory has been established with several RISC based Unix and Pentium based NOVELL Windows NT Servers connected in a LAN with 70 nos. 486 / 586 based client Systems having operating system compliant with POSIX, X/open etc., added with all software development tools. Under TEQIP Scheme 40 more computer are connected in LANs, thus providing single machine to each student in the Lab.
R & D activities in the Department started from its very inception when a CSIR sponsored research project on "Computer Aided Signal Restoration by AI Approach was assigned. Teachers of the Department have already produced a number of Ph.D.s. The current research activities of the Department mostly deal with the following areas:
* Artificial Intelligence & Expert System Design * Broad band communication * Fault tolerant Design of Interconnected Network * Image Processing through Parallel Architecture * Microprocessors based system Design for Real Time Applications * Mobile computing * Object Oriented Database Technology * Theory and Application of Cellular Automata * VLSI design and test
The faculty members of the Department have already published a large no. of research papers in different National & International Journal and Conference Proceedings in last twenty-five years. The faculty members of the department have worked on different research projects funded by national and international companies such as Intel (U.S.A.), Fujitsu (U.S.A.), SAS (Bangalore), AICTE (India). In addition, Dept of Science & Technology, Govt. of India sanctioned Rs. 1,85,00,00,0 for promoting academic & research environment on this department. The C.S.T. department is also collaborating with DRDO (Govt. of India) on a number of research areas. Computing facilities of the department have been augmented through research projects funding. M/S Intel Corporation has sanctioned Rs. 18.00 lakhs for a project to the department on Image processing.
