Charles John Tottenham, 9th Marquess of Ely (born 1943) is a British peer and member of the aristocracy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland through Irish descent.
In 1973 Lord Ely adopted a son, known now as Lord Andrew John Tottenham. However, under British Law sons who are adopted are unable to succeed to a peerage. However, adopted children are granted the use of a curtesy title granted to legitimate younger children of a peer. Therefore, the heir apparent the Marquessette is the present holders younger brother Lord Timothy Craig Tottenham (b. 1948).
