Career

Barun Sobti debuted into the Television industry with a short stint in the faith-oriented show on Star Plus - Shraddha, opposite Neha Janpandit as Swayam Khurana, a character with subtle grey shades.

He then appeared in a negative cameo role of Dr. Raj in Dill Mill Gayye, after which he played the lead role of the carefree Shravan Jaiswal in the Sony television series Baat Hamari Pakki Hai (2010).[5]

Through Baat Hamari Pakki Hai, Sobti received his first noticeable role as the carefree Shravan Jaiswal, a rich spoilt brat finding his love through a beautiful heartfelt journey from a directionless irresponsible boy to a responsible and caring husband. He starred opposite Ankita Mayank Sharma and was nominated for the Best Actor award in the prestigious Apsara Awards (Star Guild) for his role as Shravan.

Sobti then went on to star as an angry young man in Star Plus' drama Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? opposite Sanaya Irani. He became a household name through his role as the rude and suave business tycoon Arnav Singh Raizada, and became the Heartthrob of the Indian Television industry overnight. He received numerous awards for his flawless portrayal and his character, fondly called ASR went on to become an iconic character on Indian television. After Sobti announced his exit from the show, the negative response from fans ultimately led to the series' cancellation.[6][7] He later played Varun Khanna in Ekta Kapoor's Radha Aur Varun Ki Pyaar Kahaani opposite Rashi Singh.

In January 2014, Sobti made an appearance on the dance reality show Dance Ki Takkar in the first season as a wild card entrant. He stayed on the show for 11 weeks until getting eliminated in the 16th week.[8][9]

After Iss Pyaar Ko...Sobti made his Bollywood debut in 2014 through the film Main aur Mr Riight. The film was a romantic comedy and featured a light hearted take on love, relationships and singlehood. Sobti earned rave reviews from critics for his portrayal as the loud and aspriring actor Sukhi Singh who plays the pretend boyfriend of casting director Shenaz Treasury's character and while pretending, the two indeed end up falling in love with each other.

Sobti then featured in short film called Dry Dreams (2015)[10], opposite Kritika Kamra. The story, revolving around the important topic of water conservation, involves a man who dreams about a beautiful girl but suddenly realizes that his life goes upside down because of her. It is one of the most watched and widely shared videos on its distributor - Pocket Films' website.

In 2016, Sobti made his comeback to television and played the lead in Zee TV's Ishq Bana Di Jodi opposite Sadia Khan. Produced by Gul Khan & Karan Chaggar, the show had much appreciation from the audience. The show went off air in March 2017.

Owing to his popularity outside India, Sobti featured in 2 foreign language films. In 2016, he made a special appearance as himself in an Uzbek film Sevadi Sevmaydi and in 2017, he starred in an Indonesian short film titled as Calon Istriku Putri Dari India alongwith Daljeet Kaur Bhanot. Sobti played the character Ajay, who protects his sister, played by Dalljiet, and helps her get married to her boyfriend.

In early 2017, Sobti made his debut into the digital space and featured in a Hotstar Originals romantic web-series Tanhaiyan opposite Surbhi Jyoti. He played the role of an emotionally scarred Casanova Haider Ali Khan who finds love in an equally emotionally scarred fashion designer, played by Surbhi. The series features a beautiful journey of friendship, pain, love and separation. It consisted of nine episodes and was an instant hit and is one of the most watched and liked videos on Hotstar.

In July 2017, it was announced that Sobti would again be the lead in the third installment of the Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon franchise, opposite Shivani Tomar.

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3, an intense love story of revenge and redemption had Sobti playing the unapologetically dark anti-hero Advay Singh Raizada who struggles between love and revenge, passion and pain. The show garnered mostly negative reviews however, Sobti received a lot of appreciation from fans, critics and the television fraternity and he was nominated as the Best Actor Popular for his role in the Indian Television Academy awards.

Sobti's second film, Tu Hai Mera Sunday, opposite Shahana Goswami released on 6 October 2017 after travelling across the globe in various prestigious Film Festivals. The film premiered at the BFI's London Film Festival in 2016 and won the Audience Choice award at the Cinequest Film Festival (USA). It was also screened at the Mumbai Film Festival and New York International Film Festival. Sobti received rave reviews from the critics and audience for his portrayal as the easy-going Arjun Anand in this slice-of-life film.

His next movie 22 Yards is set to release in 2018, and Sobti will soon commence working on ALTBalaji webseries tentatively titled as "Dysfunctional Family", co-starring Kay Kay Menon.
