Dunkwa is a town and is the capital of Upper Denkyira East Municipal District in the Central Region of Akanland, Ghana.[1]

The Upper Denkyira East Municipal District was carved out of the then Upper Denkyira District . It is bordered by Obuasi, the upper Denkyira west district to the north and the lower Denkyira District to the south and Assin North District to the northeast.

Topology and drainage

Dunkwa is basically low-lying with loose quaternary sands. It rises up to 117 metres above sea level. The town is drained by a number of rivers and streams, including the Offin River and small streams.

Climate and vegetation

Dunkwa's vegetation consists of dense scrub tangles in the south stretching from Dunkwa to Kyrkyewere. The deciduous forest covers the northern portions and gradually merges with the tropical rain forest of oponso valley along the south-eastern stretch of the town and Upper Denkyira East Municipal.

Geology and soil

Geologically, Dunkwa-on-Offin and the upper Denkyira municipal district consists of mainly upper and lower Birimian rocks and intrusive Tarkwaian rocks.

Education

The town is known for the Dunkwa secondary technical school, Boa Amponsem, Oxford, and St Andrews secondary schools.[2][3] The school is a second cycle institution.[4]

Transport

Dunkwa is a junction station on the narrow gauge railway system in Akanland.
