Charlie "Bubba" Harris Jr. 1926-2013
Family History: Born February 15, 1926 in Sulligent, AL to Charles Harris and Annie Mae Holliday. He has a brother and a sister, Bobby Harris and Betty (Harris) Brunsen.He got married to Doris Eleanor Ketring on February 14, 1948.
Baseball Career: Charlie briefly attended the University of Alabama before he was drafted into the minor leagues (He also was drafted into the major leagues.) He played for and managed with the Philadelphia Athletics and the Cleveland Indians in the 40's and 50's. He was a pitcher for both teams, he pitched and hit with his right hand.
Military: After two years with the Philadelphia Athletics he then severed in the navy in WWII for one year. He was an electronics mate 3rd class. He received the Pacific Theater Combat Award, the Philippines Occupational Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation. In the military he was stationed in Australia and Japan.
Education: Jones Valley High School Birmingham, AL, University of Alabama, Palm Beach Vocational School, Electrical Apprentice.
Political Career: Business manager of I.B.E.W (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers), President of the Florida AFI-CIO, Served on the workmen's comp. review board, served on the Constitutional Revisions Board, Labor advisor to the governor of Florida, Vocational and Tech advisory council, and he was on the committee of post high school education. He was also asked by the state of Florida to run for governor.
Interests: Golf, Swimming, Hunting, Fishing. Charlie was an more than avid outdoors men. He absolutely loved hunting and fishing. He owned three hunting camps. They were in the Everglades, Lake City, and Horseshoe Beach. When he wasn't working in Tallahassee he was either in the woods or on the water. One thing not many people enjoy is mowing. This man LOVED cutting the grass.
Family: He was married to his wife Doris Eleanor (Ketring) Harris for 64 years. Their three sons Blake, Blaine, and his two children Ashley and Jake, and Blair and his wife Jennifer Carter Harris, and their two boys Carter and Conner.
Fun Facts: He was married at 22, he met three U.S presidents (Lyndon B Johnson,Jimmy Carter, and Gerald Ford.), he attended Jimmy Carter's inauguration, he played baseball for 3 years, he met most of the Florida state governors, he was a democrat throughout all of his political career, he loved eating, he has been to Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hawaii, and Singapore.
Date of Death: January 12, 2013 May he rest in peace.
